Writing Overview

Writing Overview A Global Structure - structure the material in a way that allows for a logical sequence of ideas. Each paragraph / statement should follow sensibly from its predecessor. The introduction, main body and conclusion should all be linked. As a college student, lab reports, articles, critiques, case studies, and a variety of other writing assignments will come your way. The use of Wikipedia for research is a controversial topic among academics, with many advising their students to stay away from the site altogether. The goal of writing any essay is to show that you can think critically about the material at hand . This means going beyond regurgitating what you’ve read; if you’re just repeating other people’s arguments, you’re never going to trouble the upper end of the marking scale. The language used for writing an essay should be taken seriously. Support your statements with evidence and provide facts. Use vivid descriptions, quotes, poems, and provocative questions to arouse the reader’s interest. Those ideas that you consider appropriate will form the ground for your writing. Think whether it’s relevant to exchange some of them. Sometimes it means giving up some ideas or details, especially if they have already been mentioned or directly related to the essence of the copy. Superfluous data and repetitions only distract the reader and overshadow the main idea. Finally, it would be useful to ask your friends to read the entire essay and ask for their opinion. There should also be an appropriate balance between these two essay components. Try to aim for about a 60/40 split if possible.
